Did you know that your vehicle needs routine GMC brake service to stay safe? August is National Brake Safety Awareness Month, which is a reminder to drivers about how important brake service can be. Lunghamer Buick GMC shares three signs that you might need brake service.

Squealing Noises

The first sign of brake wear is typically a high-pitched squealing noise. Your brakes have a built-in wear indicator, which will create a high-pitched sound when your brake pads become too thin. As they wear down completely, you’ll hear a metal-on-metal grinding noise. This means that you’re damaging your rotors, so you need brake service as soon as possible.

Soft or Vibrating Brake Pedal

As soon as you press your brake pedal, your vehicle should stop. If your brake pedal sinks slowly or your vehicle is slow to respond, you could have air in your brake lines or a brake fluid leak that needs to be addressed. If it vibrates as you press it, that could be a sign of warped or damaged rotors. Either way, it’s important to have it serviced right away.

Dashboard Warning Lights are On

With an advanced GMC vehicle, your vehicle can often detect brake damage easily. If you have brake issues, your warning lights on your dashboard will typically illuminate. This could be a “BRAKE” icon, which could signal anything from low brake fluid to worn brake pads. The “ABS” icon means that there's an issue with your vehicle’s Anti-Lock Braking System.
